We don’t think about it. We have our toilets, so we just do our business. The truth is that western civilization in general has moved beyond the people in older nations. The puborectalis muscle is what maintains fecal continence. The muscle is controlled by posture. It works by looping around the rectum, pulling it forward to create what is called an ano-rectal angle. This angle determines how easily you are able to eliminate waste.
According to scientific research, when you stand, your colon pushes against the puborectalis muscle. When you sit, this muscle becomes tighter, involving unnecessary tension and strain. It chokes the rectum, causing you a difficult time eliminating. This leads to discomfort and other more serious situations such as anal fissures, which are tears in the digestive tract’s lining. Squatting, and the facts surrounding it, might seem like such a small thing, but it can lead to big consequences.
What Can You Do?
What’s your next move? Do you rip the toilet out of the floor and throw it in a dumpster? That’s a pretty extreme reaction, but we are talking about much more than just pooping. It is an essential part of the entire gastrointestinal system. All of our bodily systems work in tandem with each other, so this could have a much bigger influence than you think.
There’s a more positive solution for switching to squatting. Squatting toilets do exist. They’re called Turkish toilets, and can be found in many nations. Some countries offer them in public restrooms alongside western toilets. The Turkish toilets consist of a stall with a hole in the floor where the users stand over the hole, planting a foot on each side, and squat. This may seem a little rustic, but it isn’t the only solution.
